Countryside Code

(Rules for When You Visit the Countryside)

  • Respect people and animals - don't disturb people working on farms and don't frighten the animals

  • Make sure you leave gates in the same position as when you find them (if they are open, leave them open, if they are closed, then close them after you have gone through)

  • Always use proper crossing places (eg gates and stiles) to cross over walls, fences or hedges (if you climb over you can damage them)

  • Don't take anything away from historic sites and ruins (even pieces of stone)

  • Don't frighten animals or birds

  • Don't pick flowers unless there are lots of them - they are very important to the countryside because they provide food and homes to the animals, birds and insects

  • Don't ever leave litter - take all your rubbish home so other people can enjoy the countryside as well

  • Be very careful with cigarettes (they can cause fires)

  • Always take a coat, something warm to wear and some water to drink because the weather can change very quickly, especially in hilly places like the Peak District

  • If you go for a walk in the countryside, try if you can to make sure someone knows where you are going and when you are coming back
